Characteristics of a Good Citizen
Theodore Roosevelt, the former President of America, says in the
good citizen: "The first condition for a good citizen in our country is
that he be willing and able to carry his burdens." It means that the good
citizen is the person who puts himself in the place of the other, to see the
bigger and more comprehensive picture, and does not look at things from his
point of view, beliefs, and identity only because that will make matters more
complicated. The vital question for all of us is, what are the characteristics
of a good citizen?
Among the characteristics of a good citizen is participation. It
is for the citizen to be an active participant in political and social life. By
helping others and sympathizing with them, and participating in the work of
unions, religious, civil groups, governmental activities, or organizations of
all kinds, regardless of the mechanism used. In other words, it is concerned
with the sharing of burdens and interests with good citizens and participating
actively in political and social life. It is mocking and criticizing
governments and extending a helping hand to help them devise positive solutions
that benefit both the government and the citizen.
As well as another characteristic that distinguishes an excellent
citizen is knowledge. By this, we mean that a good citizen is the one who
always tries to be aware of what is emerging from public affairs. Thus, do not
be fooled by the massive amount of information available today at all levels,
from magazines, newspapers, television, satellite channels, and then social
networking sites, because it may make a person get lost. A good citizen can
read excellent newspapers, books, then follow targeted programs and learn about
different cultures. All this can increase the intellectual and cultural content
and help everyone provide solutions to the society in which he lives. What also
distinguishes a good citizen is belonging. We do not mean here compliance with
the herd policy, but balance, dialogue, respect for opinions. People who view
things away from personalization, racism, and personal temperament and try to
apply good citizenship to different lives as positive and reasonable. By
learning the etiquette of dialogue and respecting those who disagree with those
of opinion. Moreover, for the citizen to be humble and not arrogant, it is a
balance that a reasonable citizen must maintain in his society in all his
personal and public affairs.
Also, what characterizes
a good citizen is giving. Furthermore, we mean the offering should be for those
who need it. For example, many views paying taxes as a levy from the state for
the citizen. Nevertheless, a good citizen knows very well that he pays this tax
to build a school, a hospital, open a road, or help the needy who cannot
provide for their families' sustenance. In addition to preserving the homeland
through military or security institutions. So that these taxes are paid and
spent in areas that we may not agree upon, but this should not discourage or
discourage the privileged citizen from giving and paying the tax with love and
satisfaction, given that the money will go in the right direction.
Finally, we see that the
advantages of a good citizen are many, as he is the one who invests in his
country or in the country to which he belongs. Thus, he puts his money and
energies at his service and tries hard to preserve all human, urban, and
cultural achievements in him. He defends it with full force because the
excellent citizen sees not only his interest but the public interest that
ultimately benefits him.
