Writing: Psychology - FREUDIAN SLIP

Home

Quote: One might say to a rival businessperson at a meeting, “Would you like to hit in this chair? “instead of “Would you like to sit in this chair?” and then quickly correct the error. Freud would assert that what “slipped out” was meant. (p 470).

The authors are challenging the reader to critical think about the principal of Freudian slip. A daily life case scenario is used to introduce the Freudian Slip. According to the authors. One might say to a rival businessperson at a meeting, “Would you like to hit in this chair? “instead of “Would you like to sit in this chair?” and then quickly correct the error. Freud would assert that what “slipped out” was meant. (Pastorino & Doyle Portillo, 2019). Nowadays, Freudian Slips are very common and upon typing the word in YouTube. We can find hours of News Anchors or Politicians slips. They all sound funny to the public. However, when these slips are related to politicians. The interpretation may take another turn.

According to Mitchell Green. A professor of Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, “Freud suggests interestingly that slips of the tongue for example have a sense of their own. They suggest that there is a statement being made. A proposition being offered, a communicative act being carried out by the unconscious aspect of yourself “(Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh .2019, The Freudian Unconscious: 4. Freudian Slips [Video]. YouTube).

Do Freudian slips mean anything? Or they are another distorted explanation based on the principle of Hidden desires as interpreted by Freud without any scientific method used? Researchers in psychology and linguistics studied thousands of slips and came up with following conclusions: “If two words share a vowel and would both make sense in the same sentence, there is a good chance you will swap the beginnings”. (Sci Show Psych. April 17,2017, Do Freudian Slips mean Anything? [ Video]. YouTube). Most of the time the brain can catch up and adjust before you make the error. However, in some instances the processing is too fast, and mistakes happen. Most Psychologists believe that Freud’s interpretation of Freudian Slips was wrong.
